Pastry: Fresh and perfectly fine but too much of it 7/10
Presentation: Well crafted and proportionally massive 8/10
Value for money: $9 - Very large portion, Rich and filling 7.5/10
Overall score: 7.6/10
With a wooden fork and napkin in hand I skipped back to the car and unwrapped my heart-attack inducing morning tea. I sampled some of the core ingredients prior to cutting cross sectional slices and instantly noted a few surprise elements. Not only was the custard authentic in its makeup with a rich egg and vanilla taste but somewhat of a conundrum. The more custard I ate I detected a slight almond flavour. Now I like almond, but not marzipan, and the more I got through the more I found it too overpowering. The chocolate icing also had a strong hazelnut taste, as if iced then drizzled with Nutella, a first for me on a vanilla slice and quite delicious.
With three layers of pastry to devour I opted to only eat one as I found the overall size and richness too much to consume the rest. That being said the pastry itself was fresh and crispy and very serviceable, but in all honesty not much much better than I could do with frozen sheets at home. A very large, but expensive slice, but bang for buck not bad. As often the case with things like this, a smaller, cheaper slice might be better for most people unless sharing.
