Back home in Jersey and what should I spy in a patisserie in town..a vanilla slice?!
At a reasonable two pounds in price and rather large in size I was salivating in anticipation. Presented very nicely in a French mille-feuille style, compete with marbled fondant icing, unfortunately the taste just didn't match the quality of finish. Although the pastry was most delightfully flaky and simple to bite through, the custard or creme patissiere was completely flavourless. A lovely colour and texture, just lacking a sweetness, egginess or vanilla. Likewise, a very similar story with the icing too.
