This place comes highly recommended, but sadly this woeful attempt at the humble vanilla slice was highly lacking and would feature in my hall of shame (if there was one). The appearance was dubious from the word go, but I was hoping the flavours would make up for that. Sadly not the case. The gelatinous, eggy 'custard' was minimal and lacking sweetness and creaminess. The 'pastry' holding the whole thing together felt like a poorly thawed out frozen dessert. Soggy in its texture and completely flavourless and far removed from any sort of puff or flaky pasty that would be normal. The most pathetic amount of icing sugar topped the slice, making this the worst one I've had this year.
