Pastry: Buttery flaked layers 8/10
Presentation: Lacking in finesse, portion very messy in takeaway box 6/10
Value for money: $8 - Medium portion, fresh and delicious 8/10
Overall score: 7.8/10
I persisted with the fork and ate my way through the various components individually then as a whole. The custard was excellent; smooth, rich, creamy and packed full of vanilla flavour. The pastry was well baked but very messy. This didn’t have the fine flaky compressed layers of bakery vanilla slices, rather a puffed texture that you tend to see on strudels. It was well baked and buttery and offered some much needed savoury tones to the rich creamy custard. The top layer of pastry contained a dusted icing sugar which had subsided and fallen from the slice in transit so wasn’t really much use.
Overall a tasty slice. For the price I think I would eat this in the cafe next time and enjoy the buzz of the deli with a nice coffee to wash it down with.
