So back on home turf in England I thought my chance of finding a vanilla slice might be slim, but I couldn't resist popping into a French inspired patisserie in Salisbury. Admittedly this is a mille-feuille, but then this is where it all started isn't it?
Aesthetically the slice is attractive and the fondant icing nicely decorated. The middle layer of pastry is quite unpronounced due to the sogginess of the custard. In actual fact all of the pastry turned out to be a bit of a messy affair. The custard turned out to be a little synthetic, not fresh, eggy or creamy as you'd expect. Not unpleasant, just not great.
