Pastry: Slab-like condensed layers 2/10
Presentation: Some merit, Thick icing and drizzled chocolate pattern 6/10
Value for money: $4.50 - Tiny portion, non-edible pastry, tangy custard 3/10
Overall score: 3.8/10
Sweeties have clearly put a lot of effort into their branding, aesthetic and user experience, but unfortunately the same cannot be said for their recipe and overall taste of their vanilla slices. I was let down by the sweet, but tangy taste of the custard filling, texturally OK, but synthetic tasting and lacking a richness you get from whipped cream and butter. The pastry too was very poor. Clearly underbaked in the first place, the sheets were heavily clumped and unable to be penetrated with cutlery, so the pastry became redundant. The icing was also wide of the mark and had a peculiar starchy taste. This was also left behind. In essence I paid $4.50 for a nice box and a few spoonfuls of below average custard, so not great.
