Selling some more traditional custard and butter icing-topped slices, I was more impressed with the look of the French variation. Given to me sideways in a paper bag, there was no way this thing would stand again unless eaten on a plate. Instead I chose to destroy the bag and attack this wholeheartedly with a wooden fork I had in the car. The pastry looked tough in it’s make-up and tough it was. The fork wouldn’t penetrate the layers and instead I opted to tear it, also tearing the now soggy bag! I soon realised the pastry wasn’t really worth the hassle to try and eat, lacking a rich and buttery taste anyway.
The more enjoyable aspect of this slice was the dual layer cream-based goodness. I took great enjoyment eating both custard and cream and cream and custard simultaneously. The custard was a thick but not set texture, creamy and sweet. Had the slice been just custard it would have also been half decent. The additional layer of cream was very indulgent and without eating the pastry it became quite hard work. I’m not sure how anyone is supposed to eat one of these on the go as with the stiff, unrelenting pastry and volume of filling this thing would be an utter mess.
