Filling: Sugary powder mixed with milk 5/10 Pastry: Not so much pastry, more like shortbread 5/10 Presentation: My assembly, dodgy icing 4/10 Value for money: $4, 2x each component 6/10 Overall score: 5/10 On offer in Aldi and worth a shot was this DIY vanilla slice kit. In literally 2 minutes I had taken the ingredients out of the box and turned out two small slices that were most unusual. Not a vanilla slice as I know it, but a satisfying enough dessert for kids I can imagine, with a hassle and foolproof set of components. Preservatives central and highly sweet, it was at least fun trying it out.

Filling: Creamy, fluffy custard 6/10
Pastry: Hard, tasteless, cardboardy 5/10 Presentation: A little 'old' looking, fondant icing 5/10 Value for money: $5 (I think), average portion size 4/10 Overall score: 5/10
I had a vanilla slice here many years ago, but not the same as this. I don't think Cafe Cirino bake their own cakes on site, and on this evidence they use suppliers which might change from time to time. This slice wasn't fresh, but the creamy custard was tasty enough, but mainly run of the mill elements. At around $5 (no receipt given or prices on display) the product is well over priced. They do make a pretty decent ice coffee though!
Filling: Smooth, slightly marzipan scented custard 6/10
Pastry: Light, risen puff pastry 8/10 Presentation: Tidy, dusted icing, appetizing 8/10 Value for money: $2, Cheap, dinky portion, freshly baked 8/10 Overall score: 7.5/10
As Melbourne's only Argentinian bakery, I was intrigued to sample their interpretation of a vanilla slice. The finger sized portions looked appetizing and the freshness and taste were notable. The strudel-like pastry was the highlight, with a slightly marzipan after taste coming through the custard, which was subtle and a nice point of difference. Friendly staff and nice selection of cakes. I'd go back!
Filling: Custardy custard 6/10 Pastry: Crispy puff pastry. Nice crunch 6 /10 Presentation: Average, white fondant icing 6/10 Value for money: 120p ($2.50), Cheap, large portion, freshly baked 8/10 Overall score: 6.5/10 My last vanilla (custard) slice of my UK trip. By no means amazing, but a rather decent effort from the small local chain of bakeries. At least this product was fresh, consisted of good ingredients, gave good value for money and some enjoyment consuming. No vanilla content, but very standard, thickened custard.
Filling: Light, whipped, creamy custard 7/10 Pastry: Very soggy puff pastry 4/10 Presentation: Neat, patterned fondant icing 8/10 Value for money: 200p ($4.20), 2x small portions, satisfying 7/10 Overall score: 7/10 To my surprise I found some vanilla slices in M&S food after I had touched down at Gatwick. Similar to the Coles pre-packaged slices in Australia, the M&S version was pretty satisfying in flavour, but lacking in texture after a lengthy stay in a cardboard box. A handy snack on a road trip, but equally as messy. Nice to actually taste some vanilla in a vanilla slice again.
