Thanks Mel for the recommendation here..but sadly I wasn't overly impressed. You could look at the size and price of this and think that the slice should score higher, but quality over quantity is more important for me. The cream was sugary and sticky with a taste of vanilla essence. It wasn't airy and eggy like it should be, or indeed that fulfilling. The pastry too was way too hard; physically demanding to cut with a sharp knife and as dry as a hot summers day.

Filling: Double layer (Whipped cream & custard) 9/10 Pastry: Hard and too thick, but fresh 5/10 Presentation: Handsome, neatly iced, layers visible 8/10 Value for money: $4, huge portion size, freshly baked 8/10 Overall score: 7.5/10 Whilst driving through this pretty little town I felt it necessary to sample the local goods. With a traditional or passionfruit-topped option I went for the latter. At $4 the portion size was huge and I feel slightly sad that I was unable to finish it (though I had consumed a massive Mexican chicken parma for lunch in the Outpost in Noojie). The custard and cream layers were very satisfying and you can see the freshness squeezing out in the pictures. Sadly what let it down was the thick layers of pastry that were too hard to gently crunch through with ease.
Filling: rubber-like, neon, flavourless 'custard' 1/10
Pastry: soggy, cardboard 2/10 Presentation: Heavily iced, unusual proportions 2/10 Value for money: $5, a joke at this price 1/10 Overall score: 1.5/10
Sometimes appearances can be deceptive...but in this case, they are entirely accurate. This is one of the worst slices I've tasted in every single way. I'm not sure what Pie Face hope to achieve by selling these overpriced, stale, nasty tasting and ridiculous looking vanilla slices. The name itself is an insult. I have never seen a vanilla slice where the icing is as thick as the filling! Two bites and binned. Smiley faced logo, angry faced Byron.
Filling: Double layer (Whipped cream & custard) 9/10
Pastry: Light as air, flaky, light, pale baked 7/10 Presentation: Enticing and commanding, neatly dusted 8/10 Value for money: $6, huge portion size, freshly baked 8/10 Overall score: 8/10
A hearty and traditional slice in a beautiful spot. This slice was big and extremely filling. It rivals the Grants of Sherbrooke vanilla slice in terms of size and difficulty to finish. The twin layer filling is a nice touch and not one that I have regularly come across when out on the road. The airy pastry made the slice very easy to cut up and slowly chomp through, but I think with so much cream on offer a hint of strawberry jam would have given the whole thing a little more sweetness. A darker baked pastry would have also offset the intense creaminess of the mammoth slice. Nevertheless, a worthy inclusion into the Snot Blog.
Filling: Whipped vanilla cream 7/10
Pastry: Crisp top layer, soggy bottom 5/10 Presentation: Individually wrapped, passionfruit icing 8/10 Value for money: $5, medium/large portion size, not fresh 5/10 Overall score: 6/10
I have seen Gabrielle's Gateaux as cake suppliers before, but not tried their passionfruit-topped slice. These guys bake out of Preston, and judging on the soggy bottom layer of pastry I would guess this was not fresh this morning. Tasty enough; lovely smooth and airy vanilla cream filling and not overpoweringly sweet passionfruit icing made this quite satisfying. Nice enough cafe in the quaint shopping strip on McNamara Avenue with friendly staff and average coffee.
