Filling: Creamy, vanilla speckled 'set' custard 6/10

My third trip into Ripe in the picturesque Sassafras resulted in a rather average baguette followed by an underwhelming passionfruit topped vanilla slice. With no prices next to their large and diverse cake selection I had to guess the price of this by working backwards. The slice itself was OK; quite tasty, but lacking in finesse. The custard had vanilla bean running through but had been set to within an inch of it's life with gelatin. The pastry was below par and led me to believe that they were not freshly baked as one would hope. Sadly there was no crunch, flake or richness from their pale and slightly soft layers. Finally, the passionfruit icing; sweet, flavoursome and a nice thickness and a good addition.

Filling: Pudding mix-inspired custard 4/10
Pastry: Underbaked but fresh 6/10 Presentation: Small, rectangular and lightly dusted 5/10 Value for money: $5, freshly baked, undersized 4/10 Overall score: 4.75/10
Let's get things straight..I like this place as a cafe. Their coffee is good, staff are friendly and I love their logo. However, their vanilla slice is slightly inadequate. Not sure if these are baked on site or brought in, but the whole thing is a bit too rudimentary for my liking. The pastry is underbaked and flimsy, the custard is very 'out of a packet' and lifeless and the presentation is not overly enticing for a sizeable $5. Shame really.
Filling: Non descript and a bit sparse 4/10
Pastry: Typically buttery and French 8.5/10 Presentation: Decorative sticky icing, triple layer mille-feuille style 8/10 Value for money: $5.80, freshly baked 7/10 Overall score: 6.85/10
This French patisserie in the far east of Camberwell has been on the radar for a while and I was pleased to get there at 7.45am this morning to see the freshly baked batch in the top shelf of their refrigerated cabinet. At $5.80 the price is a bit steep, though typical for a French style bakery in the suburbs. The mille-feuille styled slice looked the part but missed the mark with flavour. It's pastry was the hero; three layers of crumbly, buttery flakiness, but sadly the creme patissiere lacked real destinction and was sparsely applied. I thought the decorative, silky icing might add some vanilla to the mix, but again I was left wanting. Mrs B also applied herself well to the two eclairs and especially appreciated the espresso shot that was delivered for her efforts!
