I arrived in Huskisson Bay after a long drive with the intention of ticking this place off my bucket list. Unbelievably by 3pm they had sold out of their reputable vanilla slices. Instead of crying and storming out I ordered the closest thing to a vanilla slice on the menu - a custard/cream éclair. Very fresh cream and velvety custard and beautiful choux pastry. I have unfinished business with this place.

In one word: Festive Second slice off the bucket list. Tatura Hot Bread have a history of winning awards at the Merbein Vanilla Slice Challenge and again won bronze in 2014. I was excited to sample one of these on my way through the town. First impressions were very good with the addition of the Christmas decorative fondant icing a nice touch for my Christmas Eve visit. The freshness of the slice was clearly visible with such ease to cut and eat it. The custard so creamy , sweet and vanilla flavoured. The pastry so crumbly and crisp a knife cut through it with ease. Delicious and not hard to see why these guys have such a good reputation. Rating: N/A
Vanilla Sliced - Love it! I couldn't bring myself to buy one of these, but thought it was worth noting its ridiculously cheap price of $2 and possibly the award for the most "snotty" looking snot block going. Crazy icing too! Will just have to imagine how it tastes.
Rating: 8/10 In one word: GOLDen Third slice off the bucket list! My second slice of the day, bought as a take away then finally devoured when I reached Canberra on Christmas Eve. I went for the French vanilla option (icing sugar dusting) over the fondant icing as the portion was bigger and the custard looked fresher. It was 60 cents more expensive at $4.10. A smooth, creamy custard and sharp pastry considering it had travelled for a few hours in an Esky. A tasty slice, not the most flavoursome or mind blowing, but pretty decent. What a great little gold mining town Beechworth is (or was).

In one word: WOW! First vanilla slice off the bucket list. WOW! This really was a pleasant surprise - I was not expecting a passionfruit glaze. The freshness, creaminess and range of flavours in this left me wanting more. It was incredibly 'vanillary', yet 'passionfruity' too. Creamy, yet sweet. Pastry not quite crisp enough for my liking which made it a knife and fork job, but mighty close to perfection.

I thought this might be a wildcard, but I was wrong. It's downfall was the quantity and quality of pastry and the synthetic, bland custard sparingly sandwiched in between the 3 thick layers of pastry. The pastry itself wasn't freshly baked and tasted like it was out of a packet. The custard wasn't creamy or vanilla flavoured and again could have been made with powdered custard. Shame. I had tried this one in 2013 and didn't understand the hype as "Melbourne's Best". It was nice, but not knock-out. So I went back, sampled it again and I have to say their slices are quite delicious. The pastry is so beautifully baked so that it crumbles and flakes. The custard is subtly vanilla scented, creamy and smooth. Good size portion, but the dusted icing sugar would be better as fondant icing in my opinion. Glad I went back for a second round. Rating: 9/10
Best vanilla slice in the CBD that I have found so far. Custard easily as good as Bourkies or Gustos. Delicious flaky pastry and crisp icing made this a joy to cut up and eat, At $2.80 a slice, probably the best value for money per square cm of vanilla slice going too. Very impressed.

Enticed in by the little buggers in the window I sampled what looked to be quite a nice looking slice. However eating this one freestyle (no cutlery/plate) I found it hard getting through the slightly soggy pastry. What concerned me more was the 'funky' aftertaste from the custard. I'm guessing the heat of the window is not the best place to store a vanilla slice in the heat of the sun! Disappointing. |
