Filling: Lightly whipped vanilla cream 6/10

Some people place the Jahdomes vanilla slices in the same league as the famous Sorrento slices, so I had to drive out to Mill Park to investigate. After eating a pleasant breakfast (pulled pork eggs Benedict) in the cafe I took my vanilla slice (and the cookies and cream cheesecake for Mrs B) away to consume at the nearby Plenty Gorge Park. After taking one bite, watching half of my filling squidge out from between the three payers of pastry, I decided to get a fork and eat it out of the box. Positives are the sheer size of the slice and the freshness of the pastry. Sadly, the filling just wasn't anywhere near the quality required to hit the high marks. Plus, the price was a little steep for a very (very) suburban cafe.

Filling: Standard bakery custard, lacking vanilla, slightly 'set' 5.5/10
Pastry: Flaky, golden baked, wafer thin 8/10 Presentation: Delicately thin, glassy fondant icing 8/10 Value for money: $4, fresh as a daisy 8/10 Overall score: 7.25/10
Whilst walking through the maze of Ikea in Richmond my vanilla slice radar picked up on the nearby Keith's Bakery. With a reputation dating back to the 60's and somebody touting them as having the best vanilla slice in Richmond on TripAdvisor, I felt it necessary to see for myself. Their slice was pretty good; with finely baked, golden, flaky pastry sheets sandwiching some pretty ordinary custard that had a ever-so-slightly set texture. Their pastry and millimeter thin icing were the heroes of the slice, with a commendable price also notable. Extra credit should go to their sustainable biodegradable packaging for their takeaway cups, but sadly this isn't one of my scoring criteria!
Filling: Whipped vanilla cream custard 7/10
Pastry: Flaky, golden baked 7/10 Presentation: Royal icing topped, wrapped in paper case 8/10 Value for money: $5.20, not freshly baked 4/10 Overall score: 6.5/10
I resisted the urge to buy a cake from Brunetti's after dining there at lunch, instead deciding to try the nearby Thresherman's Bakehouse. Simon Sharp of the award winning Sharp's Bakery assured me, having seen the photo below, that this slice wasn't fresh. I would have to agree based on the fact that two thirds of my royal icing cracked and fell on the floor when being consumed and was very dry. The pastry was crisp and flaky and held up well, the custard had a good ooze to it when being bitten through. Nice, but pretty average.
Filling: Standard custard, whipped cream and raspberry jam 7/10
Pastry: Thin, crisp but not overly flavorsome or flaky 5/10 Presentation: Excellent proportions, beautifully stacked and dusted 9/10 Value for money: $4.20, average portion size, freshly baked 8/10 Overall score: 7.25/10
A detour home from a day out, and one French vanilla slice later. I thoroughly enjoyed the triple layer construction, but in truth I think that the custard was slightly pedestrian and the jam slightly too sweet. The freshly whipped cream was the highlight and definitely a worthwhile venture. Much the same as as the French vanilla I got from Olinda a few weeks back, but perhaps not quite as good. Mrs B also thought that the salted caramel and macadamia slice was too sweet for her palette. Sometimes less is more.
Filling: Not too shabby whipped custard 7/10
Pastry: Thin but not crisp 5/10 Presentation: Good proportions, glossy fondant 8/10 Value for money: $5.90, average portion size, not freshly baked 5/10 Overall score: 6.25/10
For a rather large $5.90 I was let satisfied with this slice, but a bit ripped off. In fairness it was quite nice; though not freshly baked, the pastry wasn't like cardboard and held together nicely when picked up. The fondant icing was slightly on the thick side but I value the efforts made. The custard was the highlight, a vanilla whipped cream filling, a nice consistency overall.
