In one word: Industrial
A big review for a very big vanilla slice - industrial sized!
This thing only cost $20 from Kirkland Bakery at Costco, but weighing in at 2.8KG and with potential to divide into about 16-20 sensibly sized portions the value is unparalleled. Usefully included are the ingredients, displaying that there are far more ingredients than I could have imagined (including preservatives and the like), with egg not included.
Unexpectedly, the product was actually very nice; aesthetically, textually and in taste. Crisp, flaky pastry and a delicious creamy and sticky cream custard were the highlights. The "slab" was surprisingly easy to cut with a sharp knife and share out amongst visitors. The icing was not only attractive, but a worthy addition to the ensemble.
Guest reviewers Phil and Marian Puff also wanted to share their thoughts:
P: "Most enjoyable custard; sweet, firm and creamy. Icing similarly pleasant, though perhaps a bit too rich? Excellent pastry up to the job!"
M: "Pastry very light and crisp. Creamy custard, smooth to the palette! Great value, aesthetically very pleasing."
