In one word: Rewarding
I had read about the French Vanilla slices on offer in this small coffee bar in Helensvale Shopping Centre, north of the Gold Coast. I went to their website and saw that they rate them as a "menu highlight" so thought I would introduce myself prior to visiting from Melbourne. What a lovely welcome I got when I finally found the shop (having got lost a few times in my hire car). Michelle guessed who I was, shook my hand and gave me the biggest slice!
What a slice it was too...So rewarding for my efforts. Light, fluffy, sweet, crisp, sticky and satisfying. The half custard, half cream filling was fresh and squidgy when biting through and packed full of vanilla flavour. The pastry was wafer thin, crisp and delicate. Then there is the icing, a millimeter thin glazing of sweetness dusted with cocoa powder that only enhances the flavour and sticks to your warm fingers as an extra treat once done.
Even more impressive is the story that goes with the slice, an untouched grandmothers recipe of Michelle. Then there is the appealing price of only $4.50...truly a bargain. Well worth getting lost for.
