Pastry: Beautifully buttery and flaky layers 9.5/10
Presentation: Neat and tidy - well constructed tri-layer effort 9/10
Value for money: Quite small and a hefty $6 6/10
Overall score: 7.4/10
Aside from my Nan’s plate, the real highlight was the pastry in this tri-layer offering. Rich, flaky and golden brown - just as it should be. I only didn’t give it 10 because I actually think that there was too much of it and not enough filling. The custard had a great colour and texture and promised so much, but was lacking in quantity, volume and vanilla flavour - a real shame. The icing demonstrated excellent technique and a a quality finish to a well constructed slice and was not overly thick or sweet. Mrs B opted for a salted caramel cupcake, but had to stop with a few bites remaining as her teeth had all fallen out from the excessive sweetness. Oh...and serving tea with no tea leaves in the pot was a first for us! Happy Christmas.
